Oilseeds to Biofuels Capacity Building Workshop
Sponsored by FAMU StateWide
Small Farm Programs, Crescent Moon Organic Farm + Wisconsin’s Walder Mfg
What are the benefits of alternative energy as a practical fuel source? Oilseed crops such as soybeans, peanuts, camelina, and sunflowers can be produced in our area, harvested and pressed to make a local sustainable source of farm-raised bioenergy. What are the benefits to farmers? Many farmers are re-thinking what it means to be sustainable and are growing crops on-farm to run farm equipment, farm vehicles, and home. During our April 17 Oilseeds to Biofuels Workshop we will show you how to take oilseed crops and press them to make a viable oil, which can then be used to make biodiesel or a straight vegetable oil fuel, by-products of the process include a high quality cake and oil. The concept of using oilseed crops, pressing them to produce oil to run farm equipment, farm vehicle and farm house can be easily scaled up or down for innovative sustainably designed communities. The April 17 Oilseeds to Biofuels Workshop will discuss the benefits of growing oilseed crops, importance of using small-scale innovative technology, preharvest and post harvest requirements, demonstrate how to use the Walder Oilseed Press and how to enhance optimum oil yield and longevity. Facilitator, Ed Walder, of Wisconsin’s Walder Mfg, configured the press and has used it for several successful years at his farm. It is a treasure to have him talk about his value-added farming system, how he grows oilseed crops to meet his own bioenergy needs. Come ready to learn.
